Dental implant

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It consists of a screw (usually made of titanium) that is inserted into the jawbone and serves as a base for a crown or bridge.

The implant is placed under local anesthesia, and it usually takes three months for the implant to fully anchor into the jawbone. After the implant has fully healed, the final restoration (crown or bridge) is made and attached. Dental implants are a popular and successful method of restoring missing teeth and can help restore the natural appearance and function of the dentition. The restored tooth looks, feels and functions like any other tooth, allowing you to speak, eat and smile without restrictions.

Unlike bridges, which can affect neighboring teeth, implants do not affect natural teeth. However, it is important to note that good oral hygiene and regular checkups are required to ensure the longevity of the implant.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a tooth root-shaped screw made of a material that is compatible with the body. The body's own bone cells form a close bond with the implant so that the implant can be used as an artificial tooth root for anchoring dentures.

How long does the treatment with a dental implant take?

The course of dental implant treatment is scientifically very well studied and, with a few exceptions, is very schematic. The optimal time for implant placement is three months after tooth removal. At this time, the wound has healed, but the bone has not yet receded much.

At the first appointment, we take a 3D X-ray of the jaw and plan the ideal position of the dental implant. At the next appointment, the dental implant is inserted. During the operation, a hole is prepared for the dental implant. The implant is then inserted into this hole. At the beginning the implant holds like a screw in the wall because the screw is bigger than the prepared hole. This stability is the prerequisite for the implant to grow firmly.

In the following three months, the body's own bone cells grow onto the surface of the implant. As a result, the implant is firmly anchored. Now it can be used for anchoring the dental crown and thus replacing the missing tooth.

Is the operation painful?

Many patients have great respect for the operation. We have many years of experience in placing dental implants and can say that this is unfounded. Pain always occurs in the body when there is bleeding and swelling. During implant surgery, an implant is inserted into a hole prepared for it in the bone. Since this fits perfectly into the cavity like a cork, there is almost no bleeding. Most patients take only one pain pill after the operation.

Immediate implant placement

As a rule, six months pass between the removal of the tooth and the replacement of the missing tooth with the dental crown in implant treatment. During this time, the tooth is missing.

This is seen by many patients as a major disadvantage of the treatment. Immediate implantation can significantly reduce the treatment time. The tooth to be replaced is even present for the entire treatment period. In this special technique, the tooth to be replaced is removed and the dental implant is inserted in just one operation. This is possible due to the use of special implants that achieve high stability even in these situations. In the same session, the implant is fitted with a temporary denture. This cannot be used for eating, but it visually replaces the missing tooth.

After three months, the implant is firmly anchored. Now the definitive crown can be anchored on the implant.

Immediate implant placement

The patient had been complaining of pain in a lateral molar tooth for years. A 3D X-ray showed a large inflammation around the affected tooth. This was removed. In the same operation, the dental implant was inserted and restored with a provisional. After three months, the definitive dental crown was inserted.

Quality of life through a closed row of teeth

"The new teeth came, and the wrinkles went." See why a closed row of teeth is so important for quality of life in this video.

Dental implant before and after

Here you will find some case studies from our practice on treatment with dental implants. Our results have been published many times in the professional literature. All cases presented on our website were treated entirely in our practice.

Dental implant

In this case, a missing molar tooth was replaced by a dental implant. The firmly ingrown implant in the jawbone can be seen. The implant has an internal thread. The crown that replaces the tooth is screwed into it.

Ceramic implant

The patient wanted to replace a missing molar without the use of metal. We were able to achieve this with a ceramic implant. The ceramic implant was placed and restored with an all-ceramic crown after three months.

Orthodontics, dental crowns and implants

Tooth loss of the back teeth resulted in displacement of the front teeth. In the complex case, the missing teeth were replaced with implants. The position of the teeth was corrected with braces and the teeth were firmly and aesthetically restored with dental crowns.

What makes beautiful teeth?

Implants and dental crowns

The patient lost some teeth many years ago. The missing teeth were replaced with a removable denture. He wanted an esthetic improvement and more quality of life with fixed teeth.

Dental implant, dental correction and veneers

In this complex case, the goal was to correct a very asymmetrical situation in the front teeth. At the beginning of the treatment, the teeth were brought into the correct position by means of braces. The missing left lateral incisor was replaced with a dental implant. Subsequently, the tooth proportions were idealized with veneers.

Fixed teeth

The patient suffered from the consequences of the teeth replaced with removable dentures in the upper and lower jaw. She could not taste properly and was bothered by the massive dentures. We were able to help the patient with fixed teeth on implants and dental crowns.

How long does a dental implant last?

Dental implants have a long durability. There are already case reports on the functionality of dental implants over 35 years. The most recent studies show that 90% of dental implants placed 10 years ago are still functional today. A very important factor for the functioning of dental implants is thorough cleaning at home. This is a very good way for patients to prevent infections.

Will others see that I have dental implants?

No. If the treatment has been well planned and carried out, no one will notice that artificial teeth have been inserted. Thanks to modern ceramic materials, the teeth blend in inconspicuously with the surrounding row of teeth.

Safe surgery through virtual planning and drilling template

During implant treatment, we virtually plan the future implant position with the help of a three-dimensional X-ray image and special software. This allows us to assess the existing bone as well as the positional relationship of the implant to neighboring structures such as teeth, nerves and vessels or the maxillary sinuses even before surgery, thus minimizing intraoperative risks. With the help of a template that is produced in our practice by means of 3D printing, the position can be precisely and predictably transferred into reality.

3D planning of the operation

In this video you can see the 3D planning of an implant treatment of a patient case from our practice. The ideal position of the implant is based on the anatomical conditions and the preliminary planning of the tooth to be replaced.
